FTEC: Thursday Day

Cox? Not in a good mood. First Gavin had the nerve to book him two days in a row and now he's getting paid in Yen?

Walter was unaware of the new doctor's bad mood. He wasn't in the best of moods himself, though.

He came in and stood at the front desk wondering which of the clinic's peculiar staff he'd end up with this time.

"What can I do for you there, Chuckles?" Cox said looking away briefly from his soap operas.

"I'm coming back in for a follow-up to a follow-up. Do you know anything about eyes?" He was going to assume that white coat and stethoscope meant this guy was the doctor on duty.

"Me? Gosh no. I'm just a doctor," Cox said gruffly as he pulled himself away from the television and motioned to the chair in the office.

"Grab a seat and tell me what your name is kid and I'll bring up your records. You been having problems with your vision?"

Walter took the indicated seat and tried to look patiently attentive. "Walter Dornez. I broke my cheekbone a couple of weeks ago. I've been having trouble with the vision in my left eye since then. The surgeon who patched me up said there might be some permanent impairment, but I'm hoping things might have gotten better since then."

Dr. Cox nodded and pulled up the medical records from Walter's last visit (http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_clinic/167669.html) and then started setting up an eye chart.

"Says here you had your stitches removed when you were last here by Dr. Goodchild. Did he give you any kind of eye exam at the time?"

Walter shook his head. "No. He said it might take a little longer to heal, and I should come back if it wasn't getting better."

"Well then let's take a look at what's going on there," Dr. Cox said as he dimmed the overhead lights and focused a lamp on the eye chart. He handed Walter the stick that you use to cover one eye.

"Cover your left eye and read off the letters on that chart there until you can't read any more."

Walter covered his left eye as instructed and turned his attention to the chart.

Oddly enough, instead of the usual giant E at the top, there was a T.

Walter read through the letters without difficulty, but it took him a minute to catch up with what he'd just read off.

Then he started snickering.

"Perfect-o," Cox said moving the blinder to the right eye. "Now what do you see there Walt?"

Walter stopped snickering as things went blurry. "I know there's a T at the top. O and M..." He stopped and shook his head. "I can't read the rest."

Dr. Cox frowned and proceeded to do another set of tests on the eyes, including the flashing of the penlight into the eyes, dialation etc.

"Well kid, if what your saying is true? Looks like your left eye is permanently damaged," Dr. Cox said seriously as he started writing out some notes on a clipboard, "However it might be able to be corrected, but to do it right we'll need to send you to an optometrist. Seeing as we don't have one here on the island, I'm going to write out a referral for one out on the mainland."

Walter sighed and nodded. "Thanks, I suppose. If it can be corrected, that's a start."

Dr. Cox handed Walter the referral. "That's the number for the good doctor. Are you having any headaches or dizziness as a result of your blurred vision?"

Walter took the referral and tucked it in his waistcoat. "Headaches. Most of the time. Mostly I ignore them." Worse thanks to his stupidity in having a hangover.

Dr. Cox nodded. "If you can ignore them fine. If aspirin or ibuprofen can't handle them? Comeback here and we'll prescribe something a little stronger. Okay?"
