Christian checked on Joxer, relieved that the clinic wasn't full of kids again. Then again, with the workshops going on over the summer, he fully expected some broken limbs, dehydration and heat exhaustion, and the occasional arrow wound.

Nadia came in about midmorning to see about getting her cast removed.

Not realizing that Nadia's arm had been healed by magic at first, Christian was dubious about removing the cast. "I think it's too soon," he said. "You need to keep that on for a few more weeks."

Nadia held her arm out. "I got healed by magic. Can you at least look at it?"

"All right, let me take a quick x-ray," Christian said, leading her into the x-ray room. He examined the results, intrigued. "You're right. You're almost fully healed. Who did this and why isn't he working in the clinic?"

"He's new. Kid named Demyx." Nadia shrugged. "Apparently it takes a lot out of him to heal people like this. But he helped Walter, Pip, and Pippi, too."

"I'll have to keep that name in mind the next time we have someone who's seriously injured," Christian mused. "Anyway, your arm's still not fully healed. I can remove the cast, but I'm going to give you a brace to wear. You should wear it all the time, especially if you're doing anything physical, but you can take it off for showers or swimming or any physical therapy."

Nadia opened her mouth to protest, then just shrugged. "Fine." At least it was removable. "Thank you."

"The bone isn't strong enough to go without a brace," Christian warned. "If you don't wear it, you could easily break it again and end up back in a cast."

Nadia sighed. Doctors were probably the only people she couldn't resent telling her what to do. "Okay. I'll wear it. But can I take it off to practice my guitar?"

"That should be fine," Christian said, then added with a grin, "unless you're in a heavy metal band."

Nadia smiled back. Heck, if the doctor had said it was okay, then Pip couldn't argue with it. "No, my tastes run more indie and emo than that. Thanks."

"Safe enough," Christian said. He carefully cut the cast off Nadia's arm then wiped off the excess plaster. After fitting her with a removable arm brace, he said, "How does that feel?"

Nadia wiggled her fingers around. She still couldn't torque her wrist or really move it much at all, but she had a little bit more room and flexibility. "Good. It isn't too tight or anything."

"Good," Christian said. "Come back in a couple of weeks for a check-up, and we'll see if we can do away with the brace, too. The longer you wear it, the faster you'll heal."

Nadia nodded. "Okay." She kept wiggling her fingers as she got up to head out, and resisted the urge to play with the velcro at least until she was out of the clinic.

This was much better than a cast.

Joxer groggily stirred in his little clinic bed.

"Wha... Where am I?" He said, looking around all confused-like.

"You're in the emergency clinic," Christian said, coming over to check Joxer's vitals. "You had an accident and you've been unconscious ever since."

"I had an accident?" Joxer instantly looked down at his crotch.

"You gotta be kidding me. I haven't done that for at least four years."

"An accident as in falling down the stairs," Christian said, biting back a laugh. "Or did someone push you?"

Joxer winced.

He totally remembered the stairs, now.

"Oh. The stairs." He rubbed the back of his head. "I'm sure someone must have pushed me. There's no way Joxer the Mighty could possibly fall down the stairs on my own."

"You'll probably want to give the Sheriff a statement then," Christian said. "But in the meantime, your vitals seem to be strong. If you're feeling up to it, I can discharge you and send you back to school, but you should rest up and not engage in any strenuous physical activity for a few days."

"No strenuous, easy," Joxer said. Then he tilted his head.

"Hey, you're not related to anyone up at the school, are you?"

"No," Christian said, "but there's some kid who looks like me, if that's what you're wondering about."

Joxer sighed with relief. "So, am I free to go?"

"As long as you promise to take it easy for a few days," Christian said. "You've got no broken bones, just some bumps and bruises. If you start feeling dizzy or nauseous, come back here, okay?"

"Got it," Joxer said, swinging his legs over the side and standing up. "I'll just hold back on the mightiness for awhile."

"Right, you do that," Christian said. "Your 'armor' is in the cupboard over there, if that's what you're looking for." He pointed to the small closet.

"Thanks," Joxer said, walking over and putting his armor on quickly.

"Made it myself, you know."

"Really?" Christian said. "I never would've guessed it was homemade."

"Thanks," Joxer said, patting his helmet after having put it on. "I'll be right back if there's any of the nasauea stuff going on." He then headed for the door.

"Take care," Christian said with a little wave. He made a few notes on Joxer's chart, and, chuckling, went into the office to file it.
