After US History, Veronica decided to take Marty's advice and stop by the clinic to see if the counselor was in. He was right. She had been through a lot and maybe it was time to talk to a professional to put it all in perspective.

"Hello?"

"Hello, can I help you?" Susan smiled at the new student, and held out her hand. "I'm Dr. Pevensie. Are you here to make an appointment, or to see the nurse?"

"My friend Marty told me I should stop in and see the school counselor," she said. "I'm assuming that's you?"

Susan studied the girl, the way she wasn't quite meeting Susan's eyes, and the subdued voice, and carefully said, "Marty's a smart young man. I'll assume he didn't say that as a joke. But do you think he's right? It's really up to you, whether you want to enter counseling."

"I think it's something I should consider," she said. "I... have a hard time admitting that I need help though."

"Why don't I give you our standard questionaire? If you look at the list, and write this down, we can see if you just need someone to talk to, or if other counseling is in order. Just as a way to help you organize your thoughts. All right?"

Veronica nodded. "That sounds easy enough."

Susan handed her the following questionaire. "This won't leave my office, and is entirely confidential."

Veronica looked over the form with some trepidition, but sat down to start filling it out.

She considered if she should add 'the demon who tried to kill me twice apologized last night' to a recent life stressor, then decided that might be better left to an actual discussion.

So she handed the form to Dr. Pevensie. "I think I'm done."

Susan took the form and looked it over; she made a note of the impending divorce and her mother's alcoholism, and then tilted her head, studying the answer to number 5. A lot wasn't being specifed on the form, that much was clear. "Would you say that your difficulties are interfering with your school work, or your other usual activities?"

"Not usually," Veronica said. "But... last night I hardly got any sleep because of the nightmares," she admitted. "And I think I've been keeping too much in for too long."

"Then let's set up a regular weekly appointment, shall we? We'll decide how long the counseling will go on after the first session, if that's all right with you. And before we go any further, I should tell you that anything said in session remains completely private, with the exception of mentions of child abuse, threats of violence to others or yourself, or concrete evidence of past crimes." She raised her eyebrows at Veronica. "Anything else will remain between you and I. Is that clear?"

Veronica nodded and pulled a datebook out of her messenger bag.

"When do you want to have our weekly appointments?"

Susan checked her daytimer, and said, "Would Thursday be all right for you? Any time in the morning. Perhaps fourth period? And are there any other questions about this you want to ask? Anything you need to know about me, before we begin?"

"Yeah, that should work. I only have one class on Thursdays and it's first period. I have self defense lessons in the afternoon and work in the evening, but fourth period is usually clear."

Veronica made a note in her datebook for this Thursday, then looked up at Susan.

"I don't think I have any questions," she said.

"All right then." Susan smiled. "I look forward to seeing you on Thursday, Veronica. Hopefully we can find ways for you to cope with what you're going through together. Call if you won't be able to make it, won't you?"

"I'll see you Thursday," she said, shouldering her bag and flashing a quick smile at Susan before heading out.
