FTEC Saturday night

Tommy was at his desk with a cigarette and the sports section.

Yes, the cigarette is lit. It's his god damn clinic and he'll smoke in it if he wants to.

Nat entered the clinic and frowned at the scent of cigarette smoke hanging in the air. Following the source, she found Tommy seated at his desk. "Mr. Gavin," she said with a nod. "Slow evening?"

Natalie arched a brow. Someone's a bit cranky this evening, she thought. "Given the strangeness of this place? I wouldn't be surprised." She gestured to the newspaper. "Anything more interesting happening in the world outside? I've been sequestered in some research all day."

"Probably not a good thing to ask someone from Toronto," Natalie replied with a smirk.

Natalie had to fight back a laugh, even if the comment was at her expense. "At least we know how to play hockey." She folded her arms across her chest and the smirk widened.

"And then spend eight months waiting for stitches."

[OMG. Had no idea how to come back to that one! ::howling with laughter:: So. wrong.]

"Down boy," Natalie says with a laugh. "I was actually making a snide comment about our national healthcare system. It takes too long to get some of the care needed. I don't think that's anyway to run a system, do you -- bomb or no bomb?"

"Were you one of the responders?"

Nat's voice was quiet, solemn. She knew what it was like to lose a comrade. "I'm very sorry. It can't have been easy."

She gives a rueful smile. "If no one ever tells you... thank you. I know the cops I've worked with don't hear it enough. I can't imagine you do."

"I worked with the Toronto PD for years before coming here -- homicide division, mostly, given my job. They were hard-working, mostly average guys with husbands or wives and kids," she answered. Aside from the 800 year-old vampire.

"It wasn't easy. Sometimes the cases, they took a toll. I guess it gets to you after a while."

Natalie chuckled. "We had our share of those, too." She glanced at her watch. "Well, I just stopped by to check on a few things in the lab, so I'll leave you to your paper."

She smiled. "Thanks for the enlightening conversation."

[OOC: No worries. I can wrap it up because of above reason. =) Thanks!]
