After a relaxing evening with Aziraphale, House felt much better about himself, and the future. There were still a lot of wrinkles that needed to be ironed out, but he was, at last, on the right track.

As long as he didn't screw up again. But he wouldn't dwell on that. He was going to be more positive, focus on the good things. Like a morning without pain. He took a warm shower and ate a quick breakfast, then wandered into the clinic.

He didn't intend to stay long. He had some shopping to do, and needed to go in to town. But for the early morning hours, he could be found with the clinic doors open, bent over the desk working on charting and end-of-the-year paperwork.

In no way did Grissom laugh at House charting.

Grissom walked into the clinic early in the morning, and was a little surprised to see Dr. House, but he took it as a good sign House was back before Christmas and smiled.

"Dr. House," Grissom said rather cheerfully, for him anyway. "I re-scheduled my treatment with Dr. Wilson for today so I could fly for the holidays. Is it too early to come in?"

Exam One

Grissom nodded his thanks, and shuffled back to Exam One, comfortable now with moving around the clinic. Upon entering the familiar room, he took his jacket off and hung it over the back of an empty chair, and then laughed when he noticed the stack of Ranger Rick magazines on the counter.

He could use the laugh. Although he had adapted fairly well to the routine of the chemo and its after-effects, as much as anyone can, this was one of those weeks in which the ways it limited him both annoyed and helped feed his still sometimes festering sense of insecurity when it came to... a lot of things. He tried to shake off the emotions that pestered him, beginning to unbutton his shift cuff.

Rubbing his face, he took a seat, checking his voicemail and shutting off his phone before Dr. House was ready to start.

"Co-ordinating the holidays is possibly even more frustrating than I ever imagined," he said with a sliver of humor, and then indicated with a nod that he was indeed ready.

As House set up the transfusion, Grissom grimaced slightly. "And my mother has discovered text messaging."

"My mother is deaf," he admitted. It was getting easier to admit these things, he noticed, and why not practice on the guy who had his medical records anyway? "Which in this case I suppose is a blessing," he added with a small chuckle.

"Home to Las Vegas. And how about you, are you staying in Fandom?" he asked rather tentatively.

"I'm glad to hear she's feeling better," Grissom said, hedging a little, hoping his awkward little shift would be interpreted as a slight reaction to the chemo. He figured it wasn't his place to tell House that he had been somewhat aware of House's family emergency, after speaking to Wilson and offering his assistance last week. And a bottle of Scotch as well.

"And I'm sorry that I will miss that," he added quickly. "We'll be in San Francisco for the New Year, but Sara and I had a lovely time at Aziraphale's holiday party. Perhaps we'll be able to hear you play some other time."

"That would be very nice," he said honestly, although he had to bite down the little chuckle that rose up in his throat, imagining Sara's befuddled reaction to him actually being social, so that House wouldn't get the wrong idea. "We'll have to bring back some wine from California. The vineyards there are slightly better than the ones here on the East Coast."

He shifted a little, "Actually, I was thinking of picking something up for Aziraphale as a thank you for his party, would a bottle of wine be appropriate? I'm afraid I don't know him very well."

Grissom stood up slowly, stretching a little and then grabbed his coat, tossing it on with only a little difficulty.

"Thank you, Dr. House. And I hope you and Dr. Wilson have a nice holiday," he said, extending his hand, while his other arm lay rather limply at his side.
