Clinic House - Wednesday November 23rd 2005

The smell of the Christmas Blend was filling the reception area and Wilson was kicked back in his chair contemplating stringing lights around the whole area...and maybe a tree.

Not that he celebrated the specific Christmas Holiday ~~don't ask how he can know about Phale and Crowley and not, it would just break the poor mun's brain to work that one out~~ but the decorations would make House twitch and might be a fun thing to do. Yeah...maybe even a little tree...

Doctor on Duty, come get coffee, visit Rory and Logan -who should be getting sprung some time today- and if you must, bleed.

"Really? You should be more careful in town. It's a scary place."

Rory peers at him. "Are you okay? You see kind of...twitchy."

"Town is scary, I agree."

He swallows thickly. "I actually have to tell you something important. And I have no idea how you're going to take it."

"Is everyone okay? He didn't hurt someone else, did he?" Rory asks, her eyes wide.

"Everyone's fine," he soothes. "Nobody's hurt or injured or even close to being injured."

"It's just..." Oh hell, just say it. "He's been staying with me."

Rory stares for a second, then swallows hard and looks down at her hands. "Oh."

Even Parker's violent reaction was better then this.

"It's just...he showed up at my door on Friday and he was injured so I let him in and he told me what happened."

A deep breath. "I let him stay."

"You knew?" Rory asks quietly, her voice shaking. "He told you what he had done to me and Logan - to Kitty - and you let him stay?"

"Uh, not at first, I didn't." He shifts uncomfortably from foot to foot. "He told me eventually and I..."

"I believe him. I believe Angel," he says, emphasizing the name.

"Believe him about what? That he has a soul? That he's sorry?" Rory's voice is cold, but only marginally steadier. "That he didn't mean to hurt us? That it was his evil self, who is magically gone now?"

"I know he has a soul," John answers, voice cracking slightly. "He proved it last night in front of a huge crowd. He hurt you and Logan and," he swallows thickly again, "Kitty."

"I know this is...bad and that I lied. But he came to me for help and I...I'm not a guy who can ignore that."

"There's a difference between helping people who deserve it, and helping murderers who tried to kill your friends." Rory finally looks up and meets his eyes. "Who succeeded in killing one, actually. A soul doesn't change that. Assuming he actually does have one, and isn't just fooling us all again. He's really good at that, you know. I certainly found out."

John feels ill. Really damn ill.

"I'm not gonna speak for Angel because that's not my place. I didn't know the other guy really well. Saw him in passing and all but this guy? Is not Angelus. I'm certain of that." He blinks a few times. "Rory, I feel sick that this happened to you and Logan and Marty and Kitty. Sick. And I know about Angelus' part in that whole thing. But, Angel isn't Angelus."

"Tara said he's still in there. Even if the soul is too. So what's to stop him from suddenly deciding that the soul isn't enough to stop him from doing it again?" Rory continues, her voice cracking sharply.

"And - and...you were hiding him...protecting him...when Marty, Logan and I were in here. Dying. You didn't question how he got all beat up? I would think he probably looked bad, though I didn't get to see. I was kind of busy passing out from blood loss while he tried to kill my boyfriend."

Oh, ouch. That one hurt. He winces and drops his eyes to the floor.

"I was hiding him, yeah. Protecting him? I'm not very good at that. I know what he did, Rory. He told me. And...I'm sorry about all this. About not telling you and about your...injuries. I asked him to stay," John mumbles, "because he wants a second chance. I hope you give me one too."

"He wants a second chance?" Rory's voice is incredulous, and the tears are more than evident in her eyes. "After what he did?" She shakes her head. "I can't do that. I don't think I can be around him. It's bad enough we still go to the same school."

She swallows, and tries to keep her voice from betraying how hurt she is. "And...why did you lie? You...you came in to see me. While you were helping him. You knew exactly how bad off Logan and I were, and...and he's still staying with you."

Lunch might come up anytime. Anytime. At least he's in the clinic if that happens.

"I did lie. It was because...things were still so tense, he was still recovering, and I didn't know what else to do. I had to come see you, Rory. Had to."

"And he's still staying with me. I can't...know what this is doing to you because I'm just a bystander. I'm sorry," he whispers. "I'm sorry."

"You had to see me? Just like you had to keep him safe?" The tears are falling in spite of her best efforts, and Rory quickly rubs at her eyes with the heel of her hand. "You can't have it both ways. You can't keep him hidden and expect me to be okay with it." She gives a mirthless bark of laughter. "At least now I know where to find him, and who and where to avoid."

Oh. God.

John bites the inside of his cheek. Hard.

"Okay. Okay." He takes a long, deep breath and avoids the sight of her tears. "I hope you don't avoid me permanently because that would be...hard for me."

He shuffles back towards the door. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm gonna go because I've upset you and I didn't mean to."

He closes his eyes and tries to compose himself.

"I'm sorry."

And then he slips out the door quickly.
