Clinic Evening Hours, Sunday Nov 20th

*DEATH, returning from a visit to The Fourth Sin, appears to be a bit preoccupied. He seems to be doodling on a bit of paper and then scribbling notes intermittently. The duck which he left on the desk seems to have very opinionated about whatever he is drawing.*

"If you don't think saving my life - hell, both our lives - counts for anything, then I don't need to be having his conversation," Rory replied after a second, starting to sit up.

"No, it doesn't count," Logan said flatly. "Not when I was the reason we were in danger and it was just dumb luck we survived at all."

"You fought him off," Rory said quietly. "You did everything you could. I know what I heard. And you stalled him. If you hadn't, whatever made him run off would have been way too late to save either of us."

"You shot him," Rory replied hotly "You hurt him. You slowed him down. Which is a hell of a lot more than I did. All I managed was to bite him and knee him, and that did nothing. Your struggle, at least, made a difference."

"It didn't make a difference, Rory. It did jack shit. I shot him and he got right back up. He didn't kill you because he wanted you alive to manipulate me and that's all. We were puppets in his stupid little game and I fell for every damn move he made," Logan said furiously.

Rory looked stunned.

"You cannot possibly be blaming youself for all of this," she said incredulously. "We made the exact same mistake in trusting him. And it's no one's fault except his, for being an evil, sadistic, manipulative bastard. There's no way either of us could've known what would happen."

Logan was quiet for a long moment.

"A month ago, I went out for drinks with Angelus and Bel. To New York. See, Bel's got this nifty teleportation power which lets him go anywhere in an instant. No worrying about silly things like locks and security guards.

"Angelus knew about my dad. He knew," Logan didn't look over at Rory, "that I wanted to kill him. So when I suggested Bel take us to visit my father in prison, he knew exactly what I intended."

"Oh, Logan..." she said softly, her eyes wide. She almost reached out to him, and thought better of it, choosing instead to swallow and nod for him to continue.

"He understood, because he had killed his father," Logan continued, his voice tight with anger. "Bel teleported us into the prison, grabbed my dad and teleported him out to the desert where I beat my father to a bloody pulp with a crowbar.

"And Angelus was right there. Watched everything happen. Heard everything I said.

"Rory. He attacked us because he wanted to make me like him. Because he thought I was evil and twisted and sick enough to be part of his little family."

Rory digested this, staring at her shaking hands, before hesitantly beginning to speak.

"And he was wrong. You're not any of those things," she said quietly. "The very fact that we're having this conversation means that he failed. We won. Don't let him make you feel guilty, Logan. Because none of this is anywhere near being something you caused, no matter what you've done or Angelus thought of you."

Rory's eyes filled and she turned away.

"I know you better than you want to admit. And you're wrong," she muttered. She swiped hastily at her eyes. "I shouldn't have tried." She attempted to stand and faltered.

Rory got to her feet and stumbled to the door.

"You might consider how this affected other people," she said softly over her shoulder, clinging to the doorframe. "You're not the only one he went after. You're not the only one who's hurting. You're not the only one who feels like they're to blame. And lashing out at the one person who stands a chance of understanding..."

She shrugged. "You know where I'll be."

After Rory left the room, Logan curled up on his side. He choked back the sobs for fear of being overheard, but he couldn't stop the tears from falling.
