FTEC, Friday [08/05]

Chloe wasn't sure what kind of state the clinic would be in when she arrived, but luckily, the place looked better than she expected. Once she'd gotten things cleaned up, she got onto the computer and resumed her search for anything that could explain what was going on in town. Rocks that made people go crazy was a really familiar concept for her, but this was way beyond anything she'd seen before.

"Looks like I came back to the island just in time," Ronan said, smiling a little wryly. "Want me around today?"

"If you wouldn't mind sticking around, I'd love for you to stay," Chloe said. "I'm hoping people will suck it up and come to get checked out, but I'm also hoping everyone will stay inside and not get eaten, you know?" She smiled at him. "I knew it couldn't stay quiet for long."

Ronan couldn't help but snort. "I think the chances of people staying in on this island are... minimal at best," he pointed out. Let's ignore the part where he was in the middle of the fray himself not two days ago, although he did make it out without a scratch. "The chances of everyone coming in to get checked out are only slightly better. Although Reno did say he'd escort in anyone he found outside who got injured.

"Has there been much word on what, exactly, is going on?" he asked. "I mean, I know what I saw in here yesterday -- Ms. Scully's been positively transformed, and I had a patient who was exhibiting symptoms of the early stages of what looked like the same mutation."

While it was tempting to head for the portal back to Maryland after an encounter with a teal deer, Ryan came back to the clinic. She knew she'd feel awful for running out when people needed help.

"I don't think anyone's figured out exactly what's affecting people," Chloe said, "except that it's spreading and there's no way to heal it yet. Which is going to be problematic if people show up, but maybe we can at least make them comfortable?"

"Hi there," Chloe said, giving the girl a grateful smile. "If you tell me you're here to help, I might hug you, unless hugs make you uncomfortable, in which case I will totally keep my hands to myself."

Sorry Ryan, someone was on her fourth cup of coffee today.

"I'm here to help, but you can save the hug. I'm just happy to be of assistance," said Ryan, smiling in return. "I'm not sure what I should be doing, so feel free to order me around if I get in the way."

Ronan nodded. "It's possible to hold it off," he explained. "For a little while, anyway. The problem is that even healing it magically, I need to basically rewrite each cell to basecode one-by-one, and as soon as I move onto the next, it comes back around and reconverts what I just fixed." He shrugged, sighing. "I mean, theoretically I could write a spell to do an entire person all at once, but as much as I could write it, there's no way I could power it, and even if I could, I'm not convinced it could work."

Ronan will be more than happy to drink the coffee; he could use the energy boost after the last few days.

"Wow," Chloe said, looking impressed. "That sounds like a lot of work for magical healing, but it also sounds kind of fun, rewriting things to make them better and all."

"Right now, you can just relax and hang out here where nothing will try to bite you," Chloe said. "I don't know how much help any of us will be, but I'm trying to be optimistic."

That got a grin out of Ronan. "Definitely fun," he agreed, "although I doubt I'd have said that even a year ago. Doing it bit-by-bit is... I mean, it's tiring, in the way that all fine-work like that is tiring? But it takes a lot less power overall than brute-forcing a large-scale spell. And there's definitely something good about going through, fixing things carefully like that."

"My mother used to say that a little optimism and faith could work wonders," said Ryan. "She never saw anything like this, but we did see some pretty horrible tropical diseases in South America."

"I came to help," Stark said as he entered. "Or try, at least." Not that it seemed like there was much, really, to be done for anyone turning grey. He could at least help make them comfortable. And if things took a turn for the terminal, well, he was a useful sort of Banik to have around if that sort of thing happened. Not that it would. He hoped.

"Hi!" Chloe said brightly, out of both general happiness to see him and caffeine overload. "I'm glad you're here. And I'm glad you're doing okay. At least, it looks like you are."

"Anything that takes less power is probably the way to go. I don't know if I could imagine having power like that though," Chloe said. "And I know some pretty powerful people who I would gladly trade places with."

"You've been to South America?" Chloe asked. "For fun or for work?"

"Work, sort of. My parents were missionaries and whenever they went to build a church, they took me along," said Ryan. "Along the way, we also help build a few schools and a lot of latrines."

"It comes with its price," Ronan admitted. "But I wouldn't trade it for anything. Risk death, make awesome friends around the galaxy."

"Whoa. So, you've got this whole 'helping people' thing down, huh?" Chloe said with a grin. "I swear, no one here ever had a boring life."
