FTEC, Thursday (5/5)

Scully was writing up reports, while keeping an eye on Triela.

Triela was there! She looked... pretty much like she had on Tuesday. Awake, alert, and... a bit physically tired.

The fact that she hadn't made much progress since Tuesday was something that Hilshire was very obviously worried about. Worried enough to even say something about it.

Dolf showed up a little while after his mini-party in the dorms, a Dutch flag made of cheap, soft plastic between his fingers. It flopped a little mournfully.

"Hey," he said, attempting a smile.

Triela's smile was rather more successful than his own. "Hey, you."

She was glad to see him.

"Hey," he repeated, though mostly because he needed something to say between the door and the spot by Triela's bed he was going to sit down on.

But not before tucking the flag in the bedframe. "How are you feeling?" he asked, lamely.

"Good," she answered. Which was true in its way.

"It's not like I hurt anywhere."

He nodded once, flicking the flag with his finger. "Happy Liberation Day?" Dolf offered. "It's not your holiday, I know, but..."

He had no idea how to speak to the sick when there wasn't anything he could do to help them.

Triela reached out an picked the flag up to look at it. She smirked slightly.

"I'm not objecting to an excuse to celebrate."

She grinned at him. "So... how was your first year?"

Might as well catch up, right? Since there might not be a chance to later.

"Good," Dolf said, attempting another smile. It still wasn't quite working. "Weird. I still haven't been able to get home, but I have a girlfriend now, so I guess it's not all bad."

"So you're happy?"

She wasn't sure why that was important to her, but it was.

"Emma told me you were in here," Ender said. He was in the doorway, smiling a little, looking a distant kind of sad. "Long time no see, Triela."

"She's such a gossip," Triela said in a teasing tone. "Hey, Ender. Want a seat?"

[[ Huzzah! ]]

There was a short pause. "Happier than I was when I got here," Dolf said, finally. Then his face crumpled. "Triela..."

"If you insist," he said, walking in and taking the seat on offer. "You made it."

She swallowed. "It's okay," she said softly.

Not that she knew what precisely was okay...

"But you're not going to be," Dolf said. It wasn't a question.

He rubbed at one eye with the back of his hand because he wasn't going to start crying now.

"Shocking everyone, I'm sure." She grinned slightly.

"So what have you been up to? It has, as you said, been a long time." Since it was sort of obvious what she'd been up to, at least recently.

"Hey, that's life, right?" No one lives forever.

Which didn't explain why her throat was tightening up slightly.

"Not this soon," Dolf said, his chin coming up stubbornly. Though in the face of what, who knew? "Not in our time. It shouldn't be happening."

He just had no idea what could be done about it.

"Nothing that's really all that interesting," Ender said. But really, had she expected any other answer? "I'm more interested in you. Oh, and congratulations on getting your diploma."

"Hey, at least I made it this far?" Her lip twitched and she glanced over at the chair that Hilshire had eventually vacated so that he could make some calls back to Rome.

"You know I almost die when I was younger, right?"
