In a sign of great improvement, Thursday actually had lucid moments during the evening.

Sometime in the evening, Karal made his way down to the clinic to check on Thursday. Altra was still asleep, or he'd have been there, too.

He very quietly approached her, settling on a chair next to her bed. "Thursday?" he said, quiet enough it shouldn't wake her if she was asleep. No, he wouldn't normally use her given name, but circumstances weren't exactly normal.

Thursday had only been dozing lightly and while the sound of Karal coming to sit hadn't woken her, the instinct to respond to her name had. Her eyes opened and she looked around, slightly disoriented, before focusing on the boy. "Hello," she murmured.

Karal gave her a small smile. "How are you feeling tonight?" he asked, trying to unobtrusively study her. "Is there anything you need?"

"Well, I was shot," she replied with a small smile. "I'm better. Tired. I'd like to see Friday, but I imagine he's fast asleep by now unless he talked Steve into cookies and a television show."

Thank Vkandis. "Better is good," he replied earnestly, leaning forward. "If you'd like, I can ask him to bring Friday in tomorrow, so you can see him."

"Thank you, but I'm hoping to coax the doctor on duty into releasing me tomorrow. I'd rather sleep in my own bed. How are the others? I take it you all got home safely."

Karal bit back on his protest that she needed to stay in the clinic, and nodded. "We did. Altra is still asleep, but everyone else is fine," he said, hesitating before adding, "Will matters in the Bookworld be all right, now?"

"I don't know," she replied honestly, shifting slightly to sit up. It took more effort than she cared to admit. "I haven't heard from Commander Bradshaw or the Cat, so I suspect they have their hands full setting things right. They know what they're doing now that they're free." She was quiet for a moment. "Did he get away?"

Karal was reaching out to help her sit up, but he let his hands fall as she managed on her own. "I'm sorry, but he did," he said quietly. "They were discussing it before we left."

A mixture of anger and grief flickered across her face, but she clamped down on it hard and gave a brief nod. She'd see him again. He might have fled the BookWorld, but she knew where he was in the real world. He was already responsible for taking Landen away from them. The threat on Friday's life was the final straw and Thursday knew she had to take the fight to Pheces.

"Did you stay long after Altra brought me here?"

"Not very long at all. He said he left you at the clinic, and then came straight back. It was a rough trip back, but we made it." He folded his hands together, looking down at them; he'd seen the flash of emotion. "Should you need our help again, you only have to ask."

"Oh, Bright Flame, I'd much rather never be in such a situation again!" he replied. "But nevertheless, if it's necessary, Altra and I are willing to help however we can."

"No, you're not," he said firmly, shaking his head. "Are you thirsty? Or hungry at all?" Karal doubted the latter, but knew that drinking lots of water was important after extensive blood loss.

Karal very nearly grinned. "Tea I can arrange," he promised, hopping to his feet and going in search of tea.

He returned shortly, carrying a mug of tea, which he offered her. "Not up to the usual standard, but better than nothing. Do you need help?"

She shook her head as she accepted the tea with her good hand. Thursday had to prepare herself for a moment before she could raise it to her lips, but it was well worth the effort. She did, however, need Karal's assistance to put the mug down off to the side once she'd had a few sips.

Assistance which he gladly gave, barely managing not to hover. "You should rest," he said quietly.

"My master used to feel exactly the same way," Karal said, smiling a little. "Yet even he occasionally admitted that I was correct. Not often, mind, but sometimes."

"I think in this case I'll have to follow your master and defer to you on this one." She shifted again, down into the bed further to get comfortable, grimacing as she unsettled her shoulder. "I'll stop by tomorrow during your shift if they let me out of here."

"Only if you feel up to it. I can handle the library for one day. You need to take the time to get better." His tone was just shy of being scolding, and he moved the mug, making sure it was within her reach as he straightened. It kept him from fussing over her more than he already had. "And it won't happen if you don't care for yourself."

It took a good amount of effort to keep her amusement in check and even then it was hard to keep a raised eyebrow and the corner of her mouth upturning at bay. She nodded. "Of course. You're right." She was still amused.

"I'll make sure your office is ready for you," he said. "Vkandis watch over you." With one last smile, Karal slipped back out of the exam room.
